Effective Wood Utilisation Research Project

Introduction

The Effective Wood Utilisation Research Project in Sarawak is a 5-year technical co-operation, sponsored by the Government of Japan and implemented jointly by the Government of Sarawak [through the Timber Research & Technical Training Centre (TRTTC), Forest Department] and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project which commenced in April 1993, is designed for collaborative research in developing effective and efficient timber utilisation technologies consistent with the Government's policy of sustainable forest management and in line with the recommendation of the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) on development of timber industries in Sarawak.

Objective of the Project

The objective of the Project is to develop and improve wood processing technology so as to promote effective and efficient utilisation of timber in Sarawak compatible with the policy of sustainable forest management.

Activities of the Project

Research work is carried out on local timbers particularly lesser known species and fast growing species in the following fields:

Wood Properties
Anatomical Studies for Wood Identification, Mechanical Properties and End Use Classification
Sawmilling and Machining 
Sawmilling, Timber Machining
Drying
Drying Schedules, Methods and Properties
Wood Lamination
Gluing Techniques, Wood Lamination Techniques, Mechanical Properties and Durability of Laminated Wood
Particleboard
Manufacturing Techniques and Evaluation of Particleboard
Wood Improvement
Improvement of Preservative Penetration of Refractory Species, Durability Evaluation and Coating Technology
