FUNCTIONS OF FOREST DEPARTMENT.
Core Functions of Forest Department
- Management of Forest Resources;
- Constitution of Totally Protected Areas (TPAs) and Permanent Forest Estates (PFEs) and
- Enforcement of the Ordinances.
Subsidiary Functions of Forest Department
- To constitute any area as Forest Reserves, Protected Forests, Communal Forests, National Parks, Nature Reserves and Wildlife Sanctuaries;
- To impose and collect royalties, premiums, fees and other payments due to the Government;
- To issue licences and permits under the Forests Ordinance (Cap.126), National Parks & Nature Reserves Ordinance (Cap.27) and Wild Life Protection Ordinance (Cap.26);
- To regulate production and export of logs from Sarawak;
- To enforce laws and regulations under the Forests Ordinance (Cap.126), National Parks & Nature Reserve Ordinance (Cap.27) and Wild Life Protection Ordinance (Cap.26)
- To monitor and audit the establishment of planted forests and to collect payments due to the Government under Forest (Planted Forests) Rules, 1997;
- To monitor and audit revenue collection and forest management;
- To conduct fundamental forest research and biodiversity conservation and rehabilitation programme;
- To be responsible for addressing any global issues related to forestry;
- To enforce and regulate the implementation of sustainable forest management activities and
- To develop National Parks and Natures Reserves as premier destination for ecotourism.
