Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa)
Measurements: Total length from nose to tip of tail 1.5 m or more.
Identification: The largest cat known to occur in Borneo. Varies from very pale sandy brown to very dark. Almost always has a pattern of cloud-like markings on the sides of the body - totally black specimens have been reported but not confirmed. The upper canines are very relative to the skull with a clear gap between them and the cheek teeth.
Similar species: the Marble Cat, Felis marmorata, and other cats are smaller; the Binturong, Arctictis binturong, is sometimes mistaken for a black Clouded Leopard, but has long shaggy hair, ear tufts, no coat pattern and a prehensile tail.
Ecology and Habitat: Mainly nocturnal and arboreal, but sometimes active during the day. In logged forest, often travels on the ground. Diet includes pigs, deer, monkeys, Orang-utans and similar mammals. Occurs in tall and secondary forests, sometimes in mangrove; rarely enters plantations.
Distribution: N.n. diardi. Recorded from many scattered localities; many parts of Sarawak.
