Sawdoctoring Course
Sawdoctoring is a skilled trade involving the maintenance of saws and
related machines in a sawmill. In other words, it is to ensure that the
saws are in good condition so that the sawmill will maintain the quality
and production of timber.
This course is of 22 weeks duration and consists of 15 percent
theoretical studies and 85 percent practical work. The course is conducted
twice yearly on a regular basis.
The major areas of study are as follows:-
- Sawmill machine care (including band-wheel refacing)
- Sawmill alignment
- Bandsaw fitting
- Saw welding (including stellite tipping)
- Bandsaw benching
- Circular saw maintenance
- Trouble shooting
This course is designed primarily for practising sawmill mechanics and those who desire to work in sawmills as sawmill mechanics. Upon successful completion of the course, the trainee is expected to have acquired sufficient skill and technical knowledge for the satisfactory maintenance of sawmill machinery.
This course is of 22 weeks duration and consists of 40 percent theoretical studies and 60 percent practical work. The course is conducted twice yearly on a regular basis.
The course covers the following areas:
- Hand tools and their functions
- Files and filing
- Oxy-acetylene welding
- Electric welding
- Sawmill machineries and alignment
- Grinding wheel and machines
- Thread forms, drills, reamers, taps and dies
- Lathe
- Shaper
- Lubrication oil, grease, friction bearings, anti-friction bearings
- Coupling, roller chain and sprocket
- V-belts, flat power belting
- Gear and gear drives, reduction units
- Technical drawing
- Fluid power systems (hydraulics and pneumatics)
This course is a highly specialized trade involving the design and development of profile knife, maintenance of knives and operation of moulding machines.
This course is of 12 weeks duration, and consists of 30 percent theoretical studies and 70 percent practical work. The course is conducted twice yearly on a regular basis.
The course covers the following areas:
- Tools and functions
- Design and development of the profile knife
- Knife maintenance
- Principles and practices in the operation of moulder, planer and knife grinder
- Maintenance of moulder, planer and knife grinder
- Quality control and product finishing
Kiln Drying Technology
This course is aimed to improve the overall standard of kiln handling,
kiln operation and kiln maintenance. It is designed primarily for practising
as well as prospective kiln operators.
This course is of 6 weeks duration and consists of 60 percent theoretical
studies and 40 percent practical work, pertaining to the techniques and
theoretical background of kiln drying. It is only conducted upon request.
The principal areas of study are:
- Timber identification
- Properties of wood in relation to drying (i.e. with emphasis on wood moisture relations)
- Principles and practices in air drying
- Principles and practices in kiln drying
- Kiln structures and controls
- Kiln maintenance and trouble shooting
- Kiln treatments
- Kiln and Boiler safety
Wood Preservation Course
The aims of this course are:
- to introduce different methods of treatment, types of preservatives, proper method of handling treated timber and quality control.
- to emphasize on safety procedures in the handling of treatment plant, preservatives and disposal of woodwastes.
This course is of 3 weeks duration and consists of 60 percent theoretical
studies and 40 percent practical work. It is only conducted upon request.
The major areas of study are:
- Agents of wood deterioration
- Preservatives and their suitabilities
- Treatment methods with emphasis on full cell process and OPM etc
- Plant operation and safety, waste disposal
- Quality control standards, specifications
At the end of their training, trainees are assessed both in their practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Their performances in these examinations are assigned grades of PASS, FAIL CREDIT or DISTINCTION. These grades are indicated in the "Certificate of Attendance" which each trainee will receive upon completion of the training.
