Introduction
The Sama Jaya Forest Park (Taman Rimba Sama Jaya) is located within the suburb of Tabuan Jaya.
It covers an area of about 18 hectares consisting mostly of kerangas forest and is
one of the very few areas of virgin forest still intact within the periphery of the Kuching
City urban core. Its relatively undisturbed state makes it an ideal site for the establishment
of a Forest Park.
Based on a Forest Park Concept, the park emphasizes a very strong wilderness theme where
all facilities and activities are integrated into the existing natural forest environment.
The park is the first Urban Forestry project undertaken by the Sarawak Forest Department
with the primary objective of promoting the concept of the multiple uses of forests:
- Outdoor recreation
- Nature conservation education
- Creation of reserve & refuge for urban wildlife
- Nature-based tourism
- Provision of a green lung for Kuching City
